Please note-any misbehavior today means no lab tomorrow.  Those who are off task will NOT get to do the lab tomorrow.  Another way, if you mess around, you will write all day tomorrow!

Tasks for today:

1) Correct/Take Test
 If you need to complete your test, you will do that first.  If you took your test yesterday, I have it graded and you will have a chance to correct your answers.

2)Once you have corrected your test, watch a video, answer questions, listen to a song
3) Use the virtual microscope
4) Read the Lab for tomorrow

Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 Cells

Welcome back everybody!!  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Break.

Headphones arrived and they are for sale!!! Please do not ask to buy a pair until you have completed your do now.  They are still $1 and come in blue, black, white, and red.

Your tasks for today:
1) Get a folder from the Purple Cubbies by back door.  You may pick any color you want.  This folder must stay in the room at all times!!!  This is where you will keep your the work you have completed and are working on for every unit.

Please write your first and last name at the top of the folder on the outside with a Sharpie.  Use your real first and last name (if you want to put a nickname under your name that's fine).

The board above the cubbies will tell you where to keep your folder based on which block you are in and your last name.

From now on, when you come into class everyday, you will get your folder and then begin your do now.

2) Gather your materials from the white boxes.  If you are unable to find a piece of work you completed, please get a sticky note from me and put it in your folder in its place.

3) I was able to access most people's Prezi who sent them to me.  However, I was not sent Prezi's by several people.  If you would still like to complete this project, I have links to some of your peers exemplary work.  I will mark your work as late, but some points are better than no points.

4) We are going to have our CELL TEST on WEDNESDAY.  You will need to study and use the materials you created before break to prepare for this test.  I will provide you with more websites to make sure you are prepared for this test.  Many of the sites have extra resources and practise quizzes, so take them.

Please note- you will only be responsible for knowing plant and animal cells, not bacterial cells.

Hey Students,

Some of you have been doing a great job working on your 4 tasks, the Prezi, organelle worksheet, trading cards and drawings, but some of you really need to step it up.  I am going to postpone our Prezi presentations until after Thanksgiving break.  If you are not done, you need to be by Friday.  If you are done, I am going to give you access to my Flocabulary account so you can check out the cells and living things rhyme.  

The Flocabulary Books are in the purple cubbie and you can follow along with the lyrics.  I want you to do the Challenge and the Test that is on the Flocabulary webpage.

The Trading Cards

Using the information gathered from the Cell Organelle Research Worksheet, you will be creating your own set of cell trading cards.   I will place a supply of blank 3x5 index cards in the purple cubbies for you to use to complete your assignment.  


Your assignment is to make a “trading card” for each cell organelle (make one for each 
cell organelle on your Cell Organelle Research Worksheet handout). The trading card will must have a picture of the organelle on one side and information about it on the other. The side opposite of the picture should include:   
a. The name of your organelle. 
b. Where it is found. 
c. What it does. 
d. Something that performs the same function 
PLEASE NOTE:  The information that you use for the text part of your trading 
cards MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS!  DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT just copy. If the text is NOT in your own words, you will get a zero for this  assignment.  Plagiarism (

The Great Cell WebQuest

Introduction

Cells, what are they?  What do they do?  What are they made of?  How do they work?  All of the answers to these questions and more await you as you begin your quest.  Come along and learn about the very building blocks of all life.  
What is a cell?

Task
1. You will be asked to use the web to research what cells are and what cells are made of.  
2. You will complete a Cell Organelle Research Worksheet to collect data on each organelle (cell part).  
3.You will also need to complete a detailed, colored drawing of either a plant or animal cell.  4.You will be using your research to make Trading Cards for each organelle.
5. The final task will include you creating a Prezi to be presented as a group or individually.  You will be comparing a cell to a school and answerng the question "How is a cell like a school?"

Process

1.  Use the websites provided to complete the handouts that will guide you in your study of the cell. You will need to get a handout from the appropriate box in the purple organizer.

2.  On a piece of plain copy paper, draw and color a detailed diagram of either an animal or plant cell.   Student Examples

3.  You will be making trading cards for each organelle based on the information you gather.  On one side will be a picture of the organelle and its name and the other side will list the information about the organelle.

4.  Using the information gathered on your handouts, as well as any additional information you have found on your own, you will create a Prezi.  You will compare cells to school. 

5.  Cell Games have been added and are available in the Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 post.

Trading Cards

Prezi Assignment

By the time you get here, you should have a good understanding of cell organelles.   Using the information gathered for your trading cards, you may work alone, with a partner, or up to 3 people to make a Prezi presentation.   The presentation will explain: How is a cell like a school? That's your job. Go and teach us how a cell is like the school. What's like the nucleus in the school? Here's a worksheet to help you from go to whoa! Find people or places and take their picture. Get one for every blank. Polish it off quickly because there's still more.

Using your worksheet, put together a presentation for the class. You will be graded on how good your presentation is. You may even put some music in your presentation.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated in several ways.  Handouts will be graded conventionally and assigned a letter grade.  The drawing, Trading Cards, and Prezi presentation will be evaluated using rubrics.  The test online will be a test similar to those taken in class previously and will be assigned a letter grade based on the number of correct responses.

Conclusion

Cells are the very building blocks of life.  You have now learned how all living things depend on cells to perform important tasks that keep living things functioning properly.  You now have a good base of knowledge to build upon as you study this topic further in future grades.
