Thursday Nov. 29, 2012

Please note-any misbehavior today means no lab tomorrow.  Those who are off task will NOT get to do the lab tomorrow.  Another way, if you mess around, you will write all day tomorrow!

Tasks for today:

1) Correct/Take Test
If you need to complete your test, you will do that first.  If you took your test yesterday, I have it graded and you will have a chance to correct your answers.

2)Once you have corrected your test, watch a video, answer questions, listen to a song
3) Use the virtual microscope
4) Read the Lab for tomorrow

Why Cells Matter?

Watch a video on the history of cells.  Answer questions below.  Video Click Here

True or False

1. Scientists can only make discoveries in a laboratory with white lab coats and science gizmos that go beep

2. There are three parts to the cell theory. Which is NOT one of those parts?

  • All cells come from pre-existing cells.
  • Cells spontaneously arise from carbon and nutrients carried in the bloodstream.
  • The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms.
  • All organisms are composed of one or more cells.

3. Why do you think there were so many heated debates around the development of the cell theory?

4. Can you describe a time when collaboration worked well for you? Where there ever any disagreements that led to a false assumption (like cells spontaneously crystalizing into existence)?

5.Who named the cell?

TEST TOMORROW. Below is your study guide and a

Cool videos showing cells in action

Inner Life of a Cell
Powering the Cell-Mitochondria

Mr. McIntyre’s Cell Test Study Guide

Available in the purple cubbie

You must be able to describe the function (what it does) for the following organelles:
  • Nucleus
  • Nucleolus
  • Cell Membrane
  • Cytoplasm
  • Ribosome
  • Mitochondria
  • Vacuole
  • Golgi Body/Apparatus
  • Rough ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
  • Smooth ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
  • Lysosome
  • Cell Wall
  • Chloroplast

 Sample Questions:
  1. Describe the difference between a cell membrane and a cell wall.
  2. If an egg were a cell, what would the yoke, egg white and shell represent?
  3. (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm)
  4. Most of a cell is filled with what jelly like substance?
  5. Describe the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
  6. What part of the cell breaks down food and creates energy?
  7. True or False: Every part of you is made of cells.

You will need to be able to identify every part of the cell except the nuclear membrane, anyloplast, and centrosome.  Click on the links  for the plant cell and animal cell.

Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 Cells

Welcome back everybody!!  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Break.

Headphones arrived and they are for sale!!! Please do not ask to buy a pair until you have completed your do now.  They are still $1 and come in blue, black, white, and red.

Week overview-
Study Monday and Tuesday
Test Wednesday
Pre-lab Thursday
Lab Friday (depending on behavior)

Your tasks for today:
1) Get a folder from the Purple Cubbies by back door.  You may pick any color you want.  This folder must stay in the room at all times!!!  This is where you will keep your the work you have completed and are working on for every unit.

Please write your first and last name at the top of the folder on the outside with a Sharpie.  Use your real first and last name (if you want to put a nickname under your name that's fine).

The board above the cubbies will tell you where to keep your folder based on which block you are in and your last name.

From now on, when you come into class everyday, you will get your folder and then begin your do now.

2) Gather your materials from the white boxes.  If you are unable to find a piece of work you completed, please get a sticky note from me and put it in your folder in its place.

3) I was able to access most people's Prezi who sent them to me.  However, I was not sent Prezi's by several people.  If you would still like to complete this project, I have links to some of your peers exemplary work.  I will mark your work as late, but some points are better than no points.

Jaqon Brown - Followed all of the directions and did a perfect job
Shantanique Freeman - Clear, concise definitions of each organelle
Darius Stanley - Went above and beyond by focusing on the parts of cells and how they work

4) We are going to have our CELL TEST on WEDNESDAY.  You will need to study and use the materials you created before break to prepare for this test.  I will provide you with more websites to make sure you are prepared for this test.  Many of the sites have extra resources and practise quizzes, so take them.

Please note- you will only be responsible for knowing plant and animal cells, not bacterial cells.
