OPTION B

We have now learned a lot about cells, what is inside cells, and photosynthesis.  We are going to transition back to animal cells and look at what those cells make.

Today you are going to do some reading, complete an activity, and be introduced to a new webquest about the human body.  We will learn how cells make up tissues, organs, and organ systems.

You will need to organize into groups of 6 people and each person will pick a different organ as "your organ".  Please write down everybody's name and the organ they are doing and give that information to me.
Your choices are:

Tuesday Dec. 4, 2012 Photosynthesis

Movie Critic

Today you are acting as a movie critic.  Your job today will be to watch 3 different videos on photosynthesis and decide which is the best video.  Your response should be around 2 paragraphs long.    When you are done writing, please include this paper in your folder.

Things to consider when deciding the best video:

  • Provide a brief summary of the video. (Two or three sentences are fine; you don't need to include a lot of details).
  • State your opinion of the video. What are its strengths and weaknesses? Provide specific examples (scenes, situations) from the video.
  • Tell what you learned from the video.  (Give two or three new pieces of information that you learned).
  • Finally, give the movie a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down."

  • Video 1-Crash Course
    Video 2-Monotone
    Video 3-Khan Academy

    Photosynthesis

    Tasks for today:

    1. Answer some questions
    2. Learn about photosynthesis
    3. Listen to a song
    4. Draw a diagram
    5. Look at photosynthesis at a molecular level

Where does photosynthesis happen?  It's inside of an organelle that we just studied.

What is photosynthesis?  What does photosynthesis mean?  Click here to find out

What actually happens during photosynthesis? (remember that CO2=carbon dioxide and  H20=water)

    1. Read the first page, then click on CycleCycle Page-Answer this question:
    2. What did you have to do to get the girl to breath oxygen (the green dots)?
    3. Atomic Shuffle-Draw the picture of the glucose molecule (it's the picture where all the molecules are connected).  What do you think the C's, H's, and O's stand for?  If your not sure, look at the yellow chart above the sink.
    4. Puzzler-Write down your answers to each question.  Were you right?

TEST TOMORROW. Below is your study guide and a

Cool videos showing cells in action

    Inner Life of a Cell
    Powering the Cell-Mitochondria

Mr. McIntyre’s Cell Test Study Guide

    Available in the purple cubbie

You must be able to describe the function (what it does) for the following organelles:
    • Nucleus
    • Nucleolus
    • Cell Membrane
    • Cytoplasm
    • Ribosome
    • Mitochondria
    • Vacuole
    • Golgi Body/Apparatus
    • Rough ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
    • Smooth ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
    • Lysosome
    • Cell Wall
    • Chloroplast

     Sample Questions:
    1. Describe the difference between a cell membrane and a cell wall.
    2. If an egg were a cell, what would the yoke, egg white and shell represent?
    3. (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm)
    4. Most of a cell is filled with what jelly like substance?
    5. Describe the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
    6. What part of the cell breaks down food and creates energy?
    7. True or False: Every part of you is made of cells.

You will need to be able to identify every part of the cell except the nuclear membrane, anyloplast, and centrosome.  Click on the links  for the plant cell and animal cell.
