The Great Cell WebQuest

Introduction
Cells, what are they?  What do they do?  What are they made of?  How do they work?  All of the answers to these questions and more await you as you begin your quest.  Come along and learn about the very building blocks of all life.
What is a cell?

Task
1. You will be asked to use the web to research what cells are and what cells are made of.
2. You will complete a Cell Organelle Research Worksheet to collect data on each organelle (cell part).
3.You will also need to complete a detailed, colored drawing of either a plant or animal cell.  4.You will be using your research to make Trading Cards for each organelle.
5. The final task will include you creating a Prezi to be presented as a group or individually.  You will be comparing a cell to a school and answerng the question "How is a cell like a school?"

Process
1.  Use the websites provided to complete the handouts that will guide you in your study of the cell. You will need to get a handout from the appropriate box in the purple organizer.
2.  On a piece of plain copy paper, draw and color a detailed diagram of either an animal or plant cell.   Student Examples
3.  You will be making trading cards for each organelle based on the information you gather.  On one side will be a picture of the organelle and its name and the other side will list the information about the organelle.
4.  Using the information gathered on your handouts, as well as any additional information you have found on your own, you will create a Prezi.  You will compare cells to school.
5.  Cell Games have been added and are available in the Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 post.

Resources

The following sites can help you find additional information about your assigned organelle:

Cell Alive Interactive Cell - Excellent resource for the insides of a plant and animal cell
The Virtual Cell - The Virtual Cell is an online Cell Biology textbook. It provides students with an interactive journey through the cell.
Animal Cell Interactive - Explore an animal cell.
Cell Structure and Functions - Learn more about the organelles in plant and animal cells.
Animal Cells - The schematic represents an idealized animal cell, e.g., a liver cell. The columns to the left and right of the labels contain links to discussions of the particular structures.
Cells and Organelles - An overview of plant and animal cells.
Drag and Drop Cell Organelles - Test your knowledge of the cell by matching each structure with it's function by dragging the organelles to their proper spaces.

Typical Animal and Plant Cells-Straight forward site that tells about all parts of cells

Cellular Biology-Info on the organelles and where they exist in the cell (outside, cytoplasm or in the nucelus).

Trading Cards
Using the information gather from the Cell Organelle Research Worksheet, you will be creating your own set of cell trading cards.  I will place a supply of blank 3x5 index cards in the purple cubbies (in a purple box) for you to use to complete this assignment.

Your assignment is to make a "trading card" for each organelle (make one for each organelle from your Cell Organelle Reasearch Worksheet).  The trading card must have a picture of the organelle on one side and information about it on the other.  The side opposite of the picture should include:
a. The name of the organelle
b. Where it is found.
c. What it does.
d. Something that performs the same function.

Please Note: The information that you use for the text part of your trading cards MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!!! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT just copy.  If the text is NOT your own words, you will receive a zero for this part of your assignment.

Prezi Assignment
By the time you get here, you should have a good understanding of cell organelles.   Using the information gathered for your trading cards, you may work alone, with a partner, or up to 3 people to make a Prezi presentation.   The presentation will explain: How is a cell like a school? That's your job. Go and teach us how a cell is like the school. What's like the nucleus in the school? Here's a worksheet to help you from go to whoa! Find people or places and take their picture. Get one for every blank. Polish it off quickly because there's still more.
Using your worksheet, put together a presentation for the class. You will be graded on how good your presentation is. You may even put some music in your presentation.

Prezi Resources
If you don't know how to use Prezi, watch this video.  Click Here

Evaluation
You will be evaluated in several ways.  Handouts will be graded conventionally and assigned a letter grade.  The drawing, Trading Cards, and Prezi presentation will be evaluated using rubrics.  The test online will be a test similar to those taken in class previously and will be assigned a letter grade based on the number of correct responses.

Conclusion
Cells are the very building blocks of life.  You have now learned how all living things depend on cells to perform important tasks that keep living things functioning properly.  You now have a good base of knowledge to build upon as you study this topic further in future grades.

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 Cells

I hope you enjoyed your day off and are satisfied with the election results.  I will not be in today because I need to deal with a family  emergency.  Please treat the sub with dignity and resepect.  In otherwords, be the type of student I know and expect.  If I get a good report, 5 merits per person.  If the sub writes your name down for doing a great job and being helpful, 10 merits.  If I get a bad report...10 demerits.

My email address is lawmcintyre@gmail.com.  You may email me with questions today and I will try to get back with you as soon as possible.

For those of you who did not submit a quiz score to me from Monday, that is your first priority.  Here is the link.  Email your score when you finish the graded quiz.

Tasks for today

TASK 1
(Game) What is a cell? Click Here

1) Write down the 3 types of cells that Gabrielle is missing.
2) Play the game and catch as many of the missing organelles as you can!

TASK 2
(Model) Explore a Cell Click Here
Answer the questions using above link.
1) List the 9 different parts of the animal cell
2) Write down the summery of the part of cell.

Monday, Nov. 5, 2012 Cells

Hey Class,

Welcome to our class blog.  You will be able to find links to complete all of your assignments.  If you are absent, you can check the blog for the day that you were absent and make up your work.  I suggest you get a notebook to record any information, answer questions, write summaries  and take notes on the work you do.  This will help you to stay organized!

You guys did a great job on food webs and food chains.  We are now ready to move onto cells.  Today you have three separate activities to complete.

Activity 1
Watch the "Magic School Bus Goes Cellular"

Please write a short summery of the video (4-6 sentences)

Activity 2
Watch BrainPOP video on cells. Click Here

While you watch, answer the following questions:
You may need to watch it a couple of times and/or pause while you watch it to get all the answers.

1) All living things are made of ________.
2) Cells are also known as the ______ ______ of life
3) What is the jelly like fluid called?
4) What is the jelly like fluid surrounded by?
5) What are genes?
6) What do plant cells have to help keep them rigid?
7) Describe mitosis (please draw a picture and write and explanation)

Quiz Directions

Take the review quiz and make sure you get all the right answers before taking the graded quiz.
